A Notary is a qualified lawyer and appointed by the Court of Faculties of the Archbishop of Canterbury. Notaries are primarily concerned with the authentication and certification of signatures and documents for use abroad. They are also authorised to conduct general legal practice (excluding the conduct of court proceedings) and they may exercise the powers of a Commissioner for Oaths. The majority also practise as solicitors but it is not always the case.
Both Piers Meadows and Peter Meadows are Notary Public and their services would be required, for example, in the following instances:
- preparing and witnessing Powers of Attorney for use abroad
- handling conveyancing deals overseas
- providing documentation to deal with the administration of estates of people abroad
- authenticating personal documentation and information for immigration and emigration purposes (or to apply to marry or work abroad)
- authenticating company and business documents and transactions.
Notaries are also authorised to conduct Reserved Activities under the Legal Services Act 2007 and can perform any legal work apart from contentious matters or taking cases to court.
